Q. What is the difference between “Public” and “Community” Radio?
A. Public and Community are similar in that they are both non-profit forms of radio whose goal is to educate and entertain.  The main difference is that community radio caters to the interests of a specific locale, while Public Radio targets a much wider audience with material that often overlooks local topics. Wyoming Public Radio, for instance, programs for the entire state, while KHOL is entirely dedicated to the Jackson Hole community. Community radio is also more accessible to the public.

Q. What type of music do you broadcast?
A. Our volunteer DJs, in conjunction with the input of the Music Committee, will select the music that is played on KHOL.  Which is to say, you can expect the music you hear on our station to be as diverse as the tastes of the locals who call this valley home. Our goal is to let quality DJs challenge and satisfy a broad spectrum of musical tastes while not duplicating music programming already available on the dial.  If you have an idea for a show, let us know! This is YOUR station!

Q. What type of pubic affairs programming do you broadcast?
A. Our volunteer Public Affairs programmers, in conjunction with the input of the Public Affairs Committee, will select the talk programming that is played on KHOL. We welcome all to share their passions on air and hope to bring diversity to the airwaves by complementing, but not replicating, the programming of other Jackson stations.  To that end, we will not play any NPR programming that is already aired on Wyoming Public Radio, but may still air other syndicated shows from NPR and other outlets not currently on the dial. Our primary focus, however, will always be local news, local politics, and local thought, produced…locally, here at KHOL. If you have an idea for a show, let us know! Make yourself heard!

Q. Can I have a show?
A. Yes! After you submit the attached programming application, you will need to complete some training at which point we will assign you a LIVE time slot based on your content, commitment, and availability. We strive for a diverse mix of music and opinion and are not an open access station – all programmers must abide by our broadcasting policies as well as all FCC regulations. As competition increases for shows and prime time slots, those who demonstrate the highest level of dedication to the station will be given preferential treatment. So volunteer early and often!

Q. I want to volunteer, what is expected of me?
A. From work, to family, to enjoying the outdoors, we understand that you have many commitments outside of KHOL. That said, we do expect our volunteers to keep their word. If you agree to broadcast a show at a certain time on a certain day, we expect you to be there on time ready to rock. There are many opportunities at all different levels of commitment, but we need you to be honest about your availability. In any event, we do track time spent at the station and reward those who dedicate more effort with preferred time slots and various freebies. KHOL has no tolerance for unreliable, dishonest, and disrespectful people. So be a good person, volunteer a ton, and you’ll get more back than you put in!
